Northeastern Pennsylvania Ranked High for Financial Services and Financial Industry Support Operations

workforce_msb

A study conducted by national site selection and economic development consultant Moran, Stahl & Boyer concluded that Northeastern Pennsylvania is an ideal location for financial services and insurance industry support operations.

The consulting firm gave Northeastern Pennsylvania high marks on each area it reviewed, covering everything from operating costs, labor workforce statistics, educational resources, telecommunications infrastructure and tax incentives.

When comparing operating costs to those of Philadelphia, Hartford and New York City, MS&B found that a company with 500 employees and 100,000 square feet of space would save between $3.2 million and $8.4 million each year by locating in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

The report found that employees come to work with self motivation to do the tasks at hand, are willing to work long hours as needed for the good of the organization, don’t have a “what’s in it for me” entitlement attitude, and enjoy a strong cooperative spirit focused on getting the job done.

The Moran, Stahl and Boyer study also concluded the following:

  • Firms that located offices in Northeastern Pennsylvania cited three main reasons for doing so:
    1. A good supply of qualified/educated labor with a strong work ethic
    2. Moderate and competitive operating costs, particularly for labor and real estate
    3. Quick access to New York City and other northeast metropolitan areas
  • Local workers were consistently rated from “above average” to “excellent.” The workforce was rated higher than comparable resources in the South, Midwest and West Coast
  • Turnover rates varied by employer and type of job, but in general, were considered lower than average for comparable situations. Employees are generally very loyal to their employers – more so than in other regions of the country
  •
“It’s almost like this area (Northeastern PA) defines what work ethic is. People come to work with an eagerness and willingness to get the job done.”
    – MS&B Senior Executive
    John Rhodes

    Business Continuity

Northeastern Pennsylvania has positioned itself as a leader in business continuity, both in workforce resources and in providing a distinct advantage for a business continuity site location. One of the ways our region has differentiated itself is the National Center for Organizational Continuity.

The National Center for Organizational Continuity (The Center) is an interdisciplinary training and research collaborative dedicated to providing the educational resources to attain and uphold the high-demand skills necessary to ensure both public and private sector resiliency in the event of a disruption of any scale or type.

The Center serves as a dynamic “information clearinghouse” where training providers, certifying organizations, research centers, public agencies, private industry and individuals from across the country can network, share information and best practices, find training opportunities and develop career pathways within this emerging field.

The goal of the NCOC is to function as a training and research collaborative, connecting workers with the high-demand organizational continuity skills they need and providing networking opportunities for continuity professionals and institutes of higher education.
