Local students serving on the CAN DO board are again spearheading a collection of items for servicemen and women serving overseas who have ties to Greater Hazleton for the upcoming holiday season.

CAN DO, Inc., and its economic development counterparts in Wilkes-Barre and Scranton are aggressively promoting entrepreneurship throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania through the formation of the NEPA Venture Partnership.

Employees Dan Sweeney and Brian Demshock have marked their anniversaries with CAN DO.

CAN DO’s wastewater treatment plant in Humboldt Industrial Park is one of the first plants in the region to start using biological nutrient removal technology.

United States Cold Storage (USCS), one of the nation’s premier public refrigerated warehouse companies, today officially celebrated the opening of its new facility in CAN DO’s Humboldt Industrial Park, Hazle Township.

“USCS is very pleased to be in Greater Hazleton. We believe that the location, the community’s support, and the available workforce is the perfect combination for long-term success and growth,” said Ryan Horvath, manager of the Humboldt facility.

As the expiration of electrical rate caps in PPL’s territory approaches, businesses of all sizes are looking at their electricity bills and considering ways to save energy and cut power costs.

Officials from Tootsie Roll Industries, LLC, joined with CAN DO, Inc., and state and local representatives for a ribbon-cutting celebration Friday at Tootsie Roll’s new distribution center in Humboldt Industrial Park.

Company Officers Ellen and Melvin Gordon traveled to the event from Chicago, where Tootsie Roll Industries is headquartered. Ellen Gordon serves as the company’s president and chief operating officer. Melvin Gordon is Tootsie Roll’s chairman of the board and chief executive officer.

“We’re excited to be here to celebrate the opening of our newest distribution center,” Mrs. Gordon said. “Our company officials were very pleased with what they found in Greater Hazleton during our search for a location. It quickly became obvious that Hazle Township is the perfect location for this facility, which will serve our distribution network throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.”

As part of its ongoing series of community service events, the CAN DO Student Action Committee is organizing the sixth annual Operation: CAN DO program to collect goods and funds that will be used to create care packages for troops stationed in the Middle East. The packages will be delivered to troops who have ties to Greater Hazleton in cooperation with American Legion Home Association Post 473 in Freeland. Co-chairs for this year’s Operation: CAN DO are Matt Caccese, Weatherly Area High School; George Gera, MMI Preparatory School; and Stephen Senick, Hazleton Area High School.
